KAAS - Satara, Maharashtra, INDIA

Spectacular carpets of pink Impatiens, blue Utricularia, yellow Smithia and Sonki or at places tiny balls of Eriocaulon against stunning cloud formations is what KAAS plateau broadly looks like. KAAS plateau is home to millions of tiny flowers in late monsoon. Hundreds of different species of wild flowers, herbs, insectivorous plants can be found here.

Kaas plateau is located about 160 km from Pune in Satara district of western part of Maharashtra within the Deccan area. From Satara city Kaas is about 25km enroute Bamnoli. AT 1200meters elevation it’s a big lateritic plateau (locally called as SADAA in marathi). The laterite soil ( red soil produced by rock decay; contains insoluble deposits of ferric and aluminum oxides ) cover is just a few inches thick. This plateau overlooks the lush evergreen forests that serves as a water catchment area of Koyna Dam and which is recently declared as Sahyadri Tiger reserve. To reach Kaas, one can reach Satara by road/rail and drive 25km towards Bamnoli. The flowering is clearly visible on both sides of the road. One can also visit Ajinkyatara and Sajjangad fort which is nearby. Kaas lake is situated at the other end of the road when one drives from Satara.

Marine Turtles are under threat though out the world. They are extincting year by year. Large scale fishing business, increasing marine pollution, killing of turtle for food are affecting the turtle's growth adversely.
